How to Remove Windows 10 Icon

Windows 10 will be available on July 29th. What’s even better, it will be free for Windows 7, 8 or 8.1 Users. However, while the option of a free upgrade may sound fantastic, the icon that appears in your taskbar every time you start your computer inviting you to register for Windows 10 is really annoying. Plus, even if you decide to sign up, the icon doesn’t go away thankfully, there are a few ways to remove it.

1.Uninstall the update KB3035583

First, go to Control Panel from windows start menu. Click Programs, It’s under options select View Installed updates.

Use the search box in the top right corner of the window to find KB3035583, This is the name of the update you want to remove.

Once you’ve got this update displayed, click on it with the right mouse button and then click Uninstall.

2. Hide the Windows Update

Even though you have removed the update, it could automatically restart later. One way of avoiding this, go to Control Panel, click System and Security, then select Windows Update, finally check for Updates.

Wait for it to finish searching for Updates and then click Show all available updates. Using the search box, find KB3035583 and right click on it with your mouse. From the menu select the Hide update option.

3. Icon Still There ?
There’s a registry hack that you can use to prevent the icon from showing up.

Start regedit.exe using the Start search box or by hitting WIN + R and pasting it into the field. Then browse to the following key, creating it if it doesn’t already exist;

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Gwx

Once you’ve found it, create a new 32-bit DWORD value on the right-hand side named DisableGwx, and give it a value of 1.

That’s it. if you have followed these simply steps above the Windows 10 icon will no longer appear in your taskbar.

P.S Be aware this does mean that when Windows 10 becomes available on your computer you will not be notified of the update and you will have to manually install it.
